In the mid 90's I heard a cello concerto played with the
Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. My life has not been the same
since. Within the year I met a woman who was studying this
magnificent instrument, she invited me to her home, allowed
me to hold it and make sounds -- my heart was stolen!
About
two years later during a very challenging time in my life
I rented a cello for three months. It was as though an angel
came to live with me and care for me.
During
that time, someone hearing about my situation offered to
give me a cello for as long as I continued to use it, and
as if that wasn't enough, I met Yo Yo Ma. He was very gracious
and encouraging, and told me to read the book, "It's Never
Too Late" by John Holt. I spent a year attempting to learn
some basics and in the winter of 1997 I began taking weekly
lessons which I continue to do. Being married to a professional
musician I had the ideal example of discipline. In the beginning
I found it physically exhausting but gradually my hands
and arms began to learn how to move, how to relax . Now
I am not content if I don't practice at least an hour a
day...much more when possible.
In
February 2001 I learned about the Winnipeg
Pops Orchestra and was invited to come to a rehearsal.
I had already attended some coached beginning ensemble classes
and attended a Youth Music Camp but nothing prepared me
for those first rehearsals with the Pops! I rarely
knew where they were on a page, but gradually, week by week,
I learned to count and my playing improved and by the end
of the season I was playing most of the music along with
the Orchestra in concert. One of the most exciting experiences
of my life.
I recommend to everyone... play an instrument, sing, be
involved with music. If you've ever thought you would like
to play something... do it! Don't put it off... it's
never too late!
